Many of you don't know the origin of our iconic "Relationship" style. Of all that we have imagined or created in our years of business, this style is the one that was birthed from an incident, a dream and our hearts.
As a young couple became friends with us at our church, we witnessed such a tragedy that turned into triumph and it set our path for Relationship portraits. Their first born, not long after Easter and only a year old, became very ill and nearly died...and it all happened so quickly.
Tim along with their other friends were called to the hospital to pray. When Tim arrived, he found dad holding little Emily's hand by her bedside. He was her comforter.
Mom was close by praying as friends arrived to join her.
She was airlifted to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where she was treated and after a long stay, improved and was able to go home.
Tim, that night, came home and drifted to sleep with this entire scenario on his mind. As he slept, he had a dream and an idea was formed for a portrait that could tell an entire story in one image through symbols, lighting, drama and posing.
This was the birth of the Relationship portrait.
He invited this family in when Emily was our of the hospital and created a portrait that showed the dad in shadow holding Emily. He was her strength and support. Emily was dressed in white to symbolize childhood and innocence. The dark circles under her eyes showed the pain she had endured for many weeks.
Mom was turned the other way, yet connected back to back. She was completely in shadow, reflecting the darkness of that night. Her eyes were closed in prayer.
In one image, we came to realize, we could tell an entire story. It became our heart's cry. No more cheesy smiles for us. We knew we had a mission to tell the stories of our clients. Some were sad, most were happy and we started down a path that over two decades later still speaks.
